The team’s predecessor is Niigata Eleven Soccer Club, which was founded mainly by graduates from Niigata Meikun High School. The team changed its name to Albireo Niigata FC in 1994 then to current Albirex Niigata because of its trademark issue in 1997.
Albirex joined J2 in 1999, when the J.League introduced the 2-division system.
In 2003, the team won the J2 title by having defeated Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Kawasaki Frontale then got promoted to J1. The team has never been relegated since its promotion to J1 though it has never won any major titles since it joined J.League yet.
The players who once played for the team include Gotoku Sakai, who has been playing as a captain for Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga since 2015-2016 season, and Hiroshi Ibusuki, who used to belong to Sevilla in the Liga Espanola.
The team’s home jersey uses orange, blue and white as its base color and the shirts were once supplied by Kappa then since 2003 Adidas has been in charge of them. Its sponsors’ names and products’ logos are printed on the jersey such as “Happy Turn”, “Komeri”, “Niigatamai JA Zenno Niigata” and “Niigata Nippo”.
