Kashima Antlers is a J.League professional football club based in Kashima city and its surrounding four cities, Ibaraki prefecture and its home stadium is Kashima Soccer Stadium, which was used in 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The club was founded as Sumitomo Metal Industries Football Club in 1947 and it had been based in Osaka playing in the Kansai Soccer League until 1975. The team was promoted to Japan Soccer League (JSL) Division2 in 1973 then JSL Division1 in 1985. It was admitted to be one of the founding members of the J.League in 1991 though it played in JSL Division2 then.
However, the team acquired Zico, the world renowned soccer player who was the captain of the Brazil national team in 1991 and won the 1st Stage in the first year of the J.league. Since then, the team has constantly achieved results. As of 2017, the team holds the J.League club record for the most titles by having won the J.League title eight times, J.League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup six times, the Emperor’s Cup five times and FUJI XEROX SUPEER CUP five times.
The team also admirably advanced to the final in FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2016 and finished runners-up by having lost a close match against Real Madrid. Gaku Shibasaki scored twice and drew international attention especially from the teams in La Liga. Then Shibasaki signed for Tenerife in the Spanish second division during 2017-2018 season.
The players who once played for the team include Brazilian top players such as Zico, Leonardo, Bebeto, Jorginho and Samurai Blue squad like Atsuto Uchida, who now plays for Schalke 04, Yuya Osako, who now plays for 1. FC Koln. In addition, Toninho Cerezo once led the team as the manager.
The base color of the team’s home jersey is red and the shirts were once supplied by Ennerre, Mizuno and Umbro then since 2002, Nike has been in charge of them. Its sponsor’ names are printed on the jerseys such as “LIXIL”, “Yellow Hat”, “NIPPON STEEL & SUMITOMO METAL” and “Eyeful Home”.
