Omiya Aridija is a J.League professional football club based in Saitama city, Saitama prefecture and its home stadium is NACK5 Stadium Omiya (Saitama City Omiya Park Soccer Field). This stadium is the first football-only stadium in Japan and known as the venue where Diego Maradona debuted in the international match in 1979 FIFA World Youth Championship.
The club was founded as NTT Kanto Football Club in 1969 and it belonged to the Japan Soccer League (JSL) Division2 from 1987 until 1992. The team changed its name to Omiya Ardija in 1989. It joined J2 in 1999, when the J.League introduced the 2-Division system.
Ardija finished runners-up in 2004 and got promoted to J1 for the first time. Omiya has a rivalry with Urawa Reds, which also is based in Saitama prefecture, so “Saitama Derby” between the two teams is always much more exciting than usual matches. The team has become close in on major J.League titles as it finished 5th in the League and advanced to the semi-final in the Emperor’s Cup in 2016 though it has never won any titles since it joined the J.League.
The players who once played for the team include Akihiro Ienaga, who played for RCD Mallorca and Daigo Kobayashi, who has played for clubs in Greece and the MLS.
The base color of the team’s home jersey is orange. The shirts were once supplied by Mizuno and Lotto then since 2009, Under Armour has been in charge of them. Its sponsors’ names and products’ logos are printed on the jerseys such as “d POINT”, “NTT East”, “Musashino Bank” and “Shimamura”.
