FC Ryukyu are a professional soccer team in the J. League and are currently playing in the J3 League. Their hometown is Okinawa city, but they represent the entire Okinawa prefecture. Their home stadium is the Okinawa Athletic Stadium.

The team was formed in 2003 with the goal of becoming the first soccer club in Okinawa to enter the J. League. Their first manager was former Okinawa Kariyushi FC player Hiroyuki Shinzato, who acted as both a player and manager for the new team. They also hired Ruy Ramos as a technical adviser, who during the early years of the J. League had helped build the golden age for the Verdy Kawasaki as team leader.

That year Ryukyu won the Okinawa Amateur Football League 3rd division championship and in the following year their advancement to the first division was approved. On the same year they hired former Japan national team player George Yonashiro as their manager.

They also managed to beat the former Ariake SC (Presently: V-Varen Nagasaki), who won the same league’s first division championship along with the Kyushu Soccer League.

More over, on the same year they made their first appearance in the Emperor’s Cup as well as getting their first match victory, showing their increasing presence in the football world.

After that, in 2005 they were accepted into the Japan Football League (JFL) and they became the first Okinawan team to compete in a national league. In 2008, Philippe Troussier, who had been the Japan national team’s manager during the Korea-Japan World Cup, became the team’s general manager with receiving national headlines. However he had conflicts with the head coach and resigned as the job 2 years later.

After joining JFL, FC Ryukyu’s results started to drop and every year their position in the league has fallen steadily from the middle to the lower end of the charts. In 2013 the Japanese Professional Soccer League’s (J League) executive committee accepted FC Ryuku to the league and the decision was made to let them participate in the newly found J3 league from 2014.Currently they are playing their 3rd year in J3 and working hard towards a promotion to J2.

A famous player that represents the team is local Okinawan Kazuki Ganha, who also used to play for Kawasaki Frontale and Vissel Kobe. Ganha made his debut in the Japan national team in 2006 and left a record for scoring 3 goals in his 6 games.

The team’s home jersey is dark red and their outfit suppliers have changed many times between famous brands like ASICS, Kappa, as well as lesser known makers like GRANDSPORT, mitre, sfida and others.Their jerseys have logos of their local sponsors like “Bank of The Ryukyus” and “Okinawa Times”.
