FC Tokyo is a J.League professional football club based in Tokyo and its home stadium is Ajinomoto Stadium, which the Saudi Arabia national team used as its practice ground in 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The team was founded as Tokyo Gas Soccer Club in 1935 and joined Japan Football League (JFL) in 1992. It changed its name to Tokyo Gas Football Club then to FC Tokyo and announced that it would join J.League Division2 in 1999. It meant that the first J.League club based in Tokyo was born.
FC Tokyo has provided many players to the Japan national team and won J.League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup twice, the Emperor’s Cup once, Suruga Bank Championship once though it has never won the J.League title yet.
The players who once played for the team include Yuto Nagatomo, who now plays for Inter Milan, Paulo Wanchope Costa Rican striker, who played an active role in West Ham United and Manchester City and Yoshinori Muto, who now plays for Mainz 05 in Bundesliga. In addition, Takefusa Kubo, who was called a prodigy and “Japanese Messi” when he played for the FC Barcelona’s cantera currently belongs to the team. Kubo was selected at a member of the Japan squad for the upcoming Under-20 World Cup in South Korea on May 2017.
The team’s home jersey uses blue and red as its base color and the shirt suppliers have been Adidas and Umbro so far. Its sponsors’ names are printed on the jerseys such as “LIFEVAL”, “Mitsubishi Corporation”, “ENEOS” and “TOKYO GAS”.
