Gamba Osaka is a J.League professional football club based in Suita city and its surrounding six cities, Osaka prefecture and its home stadium is Suita City Football Stadium, which was football-only one constructed in 2016.
The team was founded as Matsushita Electric Football Club in 1980 then promoted to Japan Soccer League (JSL) Division1 in 1986. The team won the Emperor’s Cup in 1990, which was the first major tittle for the team.
The team changed its name to Panasonic Gamba Osaka in 1992 and has played in J.League since its foundation as one of the traditional “Original 10”.
The manager of the team when the J.League kicked-off was Kunishige Kamamoto, a legendary Japanese soccer player who became the tournament’s top scorer in 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City and led Japan National team to get the Bronze medal.
Gamba has advanced gradually since around 2000 and won the J.League title in 2005 for the first time since its foundation. The team is one of the biggest national clubs, which has won the J.League title twice, the Emperor’s Cup four times, J.League Yamazaki Nabisco Cup twice and the AFC Champions League once.
In FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2008, the team played well against Manchester United, which was the European champion, in the semi-final then won the third place following Urawa Reds (3rd place in 2007).
The players who once played for the club include Patrick Mboma, who played an active role in the Cameroon national team, Serguei Aleinikov, who belonged to Juventus and Lecce, Masashi Oguro, who moved to Grenoble and Torino and Takashi Usami, who joined Bayern Munich in the early stage of his carrier and now plays for Augsburg.
The team’s home jersey uses blue and black as its base color and the shirts were once supplied by Adidas, Mizuno and Le Coq Sportif. Then since 2003, Umbro has been in charge of them.
Its sponsors’ names are printed on the jerseys such as “Panasonic”, “DAIKIN”, “SHIP HEALTHCARE” and “TOYO TIRES”.
