Atsuto Uchida, born in March 27th 1988, is professional soccer player from Shizuoka prefecture. He plays as wing back, often playing in right field. His god given speed, endless stamina and top class technical skills in handling the ball, along with his wide field of vision have led many to call him the best wing back in Japanese history.

After graduating from the elite Shimizu Higashi High School, 8 clubs showed interest towards him and he chose to start his professional football career with the Kashima Antlers.
In 2006, right after graduating high school, he became the first player in Kashima Antlers’ history to secure a regular position from the opening match, while still being a rookie on his first year in the team. During the 4th match of the season against Ventforet Kofu, he became the club’s youngest member to score a goal.

That year he earned the most votes for the defender position in the J. League All-Star. He showed off his skills during his debut season, which along with his handsome looks also brought in a lot of female fans.

Even after that he continued to prove his worth by making a significant contribution to winning 3 consecutive league championships from 2007 to 2009, which was a feat that had not been done before in the J. League. For two years in a row he was selected for the Best XI, among other awards. Appreciation towards him continued to grow even outside of the country and in 2010 he transferred to Germany Bundesliga’s FC Schalke 04.

After his transfer, he got a position on the team in the middle of the season and then appeared in several matches as a wing back. During the 2010-2011 UEFA Champions League, he made a record of assists and played a big part in helping the team advance to the Champions League’s semi-finals.

In the DFB Cup final against MSV Duisburg, Uchida came to play in the middle of the match and won his first title after transferring to the team. He is also popular among the local Schalke fans, who affectionately call him “Usshi”.

He also has played in several tournaments in the Japan national team under categories, like the U-20 World Cup and also appeared in Beijing Olympics (U-23). From 2007 he has been selected for the senior national team, where he made his debut as the 4th youngest player in Japan national team’s history.

He did not appear in the 2010 South Africa World Cup, because of the team was going for a different strategy, but after Alberto Zaccheroni became manager, Uchida played as a regular member in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup and helped win the tournament. Also, in the 2014 Brazil World Cup he played in the entire matches as a regular.
